In Abidjan, the Ebrié Lagoon Under Pressure

For several decades, Abidjan has been undergoing rapid urban transformation, placing the Ebrié Lagoon at the heart of both environmental and social challenges. This vast body of water—the largest in West Africa—receives nearly 200 tons of plastic waste every day, carried in by urban wastewater. The pollution threatens the health of nearby residents as well as economic activities such as traditional fishing and leisure. At the same time, the lagoon has become a magnet for new ambitions: real estate pressure is accelerating the gentrification of its shores, while forced evictions in neighborhoods deemed unsanitary are fueling public anger.
